Interior Design in Porter Ranch: A Basketball-Lover’s Dream Room

Welcome back to our Porter Ranch interior design series! Today, we’re stepping into the world of M, our 16-year-old client from the Woodrose project. M is equal parts obsessed with basketball and shoes, and when I say obsessed—I mean it. This family has hundreds of pairs of sneakers between them! Even little R (our snack-loving superhero from the first blog post of this series) has the cutest mini Nikes that nearly sent me into full-blown baby fever. But I digress—let’s get back to M’s room transformation.

The Vision

M had a few specific must-haves for his space: ✔ A sofa—for lounging with friends. ✔ A basketball goal—because, obviously. ✔ A space that felt cool but functional—because teenage boys are particular about their vibe.

But the real requests came from M’s parents: ✔ This space needed to grow with M through his final years of high school. ✔ It needed to be durable—because teenage boys are rough on furniture. ✔ Storage was key—because let’s be real, between the sneakers and the sports gear, this room needed serious organization.

The Layout

This room had a funky layout, so we leaned into the unexpected. Instead of the traditional setup, we placed the bed against the window wall and the sofa along the opposite wall. This maximized floor space, making room for everything on M’s wishlist and keeping the flow functional.

The Design Details

  • Custom Closet: M needed a spot for his ever-growing sneaker collection and his jerseys, so we went big—a custom closet designed just for him.

  • Storage Everywhere: The desk and nightstand both have extra storage, and we added a bench at the foot of the bed for school books and other essentials.

  • The Dream Team: We brought in our go-to organizers, Ashlee & Stacey from The Go To Girls, to whip this space into shape. Because a beautiful room without organization is just a pretty band-aid—we want you to thrive in your space, not just survive.

  • Wall Treatments on a Budget: To keep costs in check, we went for wallpaper on two walls and paint on the others, giving us the best of both worlds.

The Final Look

This space is cool, functional, and built to last. M gets a stylish, comfortable room he loves, and his parents get the organized, high-quality space they needed.
